A goat gestation calculator tells you when your doe is likely to kid. You enter the breeding date, choose her group, and the tool shows her due date, a safe watch window and a checklist of what to do before she kids. This page explains how the goat gestation period works, how to use the goat due date calculator above, and which group your breed belongs to.

How to use the goat breeding calculator

  1. Choose your goat’s group (short, medium or standard gestation).
  2. Enter the date she was bred.
  3. Read the result. It updates as soon as you change the date or the group.

The tool works in any phone or computer browser, so there is no app to download. Open this page and enter the date.

What is the goat gestation period?

The goat gestation period is the time from breeding to kidding. For most goats it is about 150 days, which is just under 5 months. Smaller breeds kid a little earlier, and some local breeds fall in between. Because individual does vary, a good goat calculator gives you a due date and a window, not one fixed day.

Goat gestation period in months and days by breed group

GroupGestationApprox. monthsBreeds
Short145 days4.8 monthsNigerian Dwarf, Pygmy, Black Bengal
Medium148 days4.9 monthsBarbari, local/desi goats, miniature dairy crosses
Standard150 days4.9 monthsNubian, Alpine, Saanen, Toggenburg, LaMancha, Oberhasli, Boer, Kiko, Spanish, Savanna, Angora, Cashmere, Beetal, Jamunapari, crossbred

These are averages. South Asian breed figures in particular are approximate, so keep your own records and adjust if your does always kid earlier or later.

Nigerian Dwarf goat gestation calculator

Nigerian Dwarf does usually kid a few days earlier than full-size goats, so choose the Short (145 days) group. If a doe is bred on 1 October, the 145-day result is 23 February, and the watch window runs from about 18 February to 28 February. Pygmy goats use the same group.

Miniature goat gestation calculator

Miniature dairy goats, such as Mini Nubians, Mini Alpines and Mini LaMancha, fall between dwarf and full-size goats. Use the Medium (148 days) group. If your doe has mostly Nigerian Dwarf background, try the Short group as well and watch from the earlier date.

Nubian goat gestation calculator

Nubian does fall in the Standard (150 days) group, along with Alpine, Saanen, Toggenburg and LaMancha. Nubians often run toward the end of the normal range, so keep watching until the window closes before you worry.

Boer goat gestation calculator

Boer does also use the Standard (150 days) group. Boers commonly have twins or triplets, so a good kidding pen and plenty of colostrum matter. For feeding, housing and herd management, read our complete Boer goat farming guide.

How to read your result

  • Expected kidding date: the day she is most likely to kid, based on the days in her group.
  • Safe watch window: about 5 days before to 5 days after the due date. Kidding anywhere in this window is normal.
  • Countdown checklist: the key tasks, from the pregnancy check to kidding pen setup. Steps already passed turn grey.

How to tell if a goat is pregnant

You can’t be sure from looks alone, so use more than one method.

  • She doesn’t return to heat. Goats usually come back into heat about 18 to 24 days after an unsuccessful breeding. If she stays quiet through that window, she may be pregnant.
  • Ultrasound. A vet can usually confirm pregnancy from about 30 to 45 days after breeding. Earlier scans can miss it.
  • Blood test. A vet can test blood for pregnancy-related markers from about a month after breeding. This is useful if no ultrasound is available near you.
  • Belly and udder changes. Her belly grows, mostly in the last two months. The udder fills in the last 4 to 6 weeks, and sometimes earlier in first-time mothers.
  • Kid movement. In the last month you may see or feel the kids move when you rest a hand on her right side.

A growing belly alone is not proof. Goats can have a false pregnancy, where the belly swells with fluid and no kids are born. That’s why a vet check at 30 to 45 days is worth it, and once confirmed, you can use the calculator above to plan the due date.

Goat kidding timeline: what to expect on the day

Kidding happens in three stages. Knowing them helps you tell what is normal from what needs a vet.

StageWhat happensHow long it usually takes
Early laborShe is restless, paws the ground, talks to herself, may lick the air and lie down and get up often. Contractions begin.Several hours, longer for first-time does
PushingWater breaks, she pushes, and the kid is born.A kid usually arrives within about 30 minutes of hard pushing
AfterbirthShe passes the placenta after the kids.Usually within a few hours

Between kids: if she has twins or triplets, the next kid usually follows within 15 to 60 minutes. She may rest in between, but she should not be straining hard without result.

Call your vet if:

  • She has pushed hard for 30 minutes or more with no progress.
  • You see only one leg, or a head with no legs, or anything that looks wrong.
  • She stops pushing but you can tell there is another kid.
  • The placenta hasn’t come out after 12 hours.
  • She looks weak, shaky or in distress.

Keep your vet’s phone number somewhere easy to find before the due date, not on the day.

What to do right after kidding

The first hours decide how well the kids do. Work through these steps in order:

  1. Clear the nose and mouth. Wipe away mucus so the kid can breathe.
  2. Dry the kid. Let the doe lick it, or rub it with a clean towel, especially in cold weather.
  3. Dip the navel. Dip the navel cord in iodine (the 7% strength is commonly used) to prevent infection.
  4. Make sure every kid drinks colostrum. The first milk carries the antibodies the kid needs. Kids should nurse within the first hours, ideally within the first 1 to 2 hours. Weak kids may need milk fed by bottle or tube; ask your vet to show you how.
  5. Check the doe. Give her clean water, good hay, and a quiet space. Watch that she passes the placenta and check that her udder isn’t hard or hot.
  6. Watch the kids for the first day. Each kid should stand, nurse and stay warm. A kid that is cold, weak or not nursing needs help quickly.
  7. Write down the dates. Record the kidding date and how many kids were born. Over time these records show you how long your own does carry, which you can use instead of the group average.

A doe will usually come back into heat about 5 to 8 weeks after kidding, but breed her by body condition, not just the calendar.
